Customs & Etiquette in Costa Rica





While Costa Rica has a reputation for being a laid back country with their “Pura Vida” mentality, they are also a deeply traditional and socially formal culture.

This quick guide should keep you in the good graces of everyone you meet during your stay in Costa Rica.

Greetings:
Male to Male- a handshake is the normal form of greeting between two men. If they are close friends, this can be accompanied by an arm or shoulder pat.
Male to female and female to female- a handshake is fine at the initial meeting but after getting to know each other a kiss on the cheek is the normal.

Appearance/Dress:
Costa Ricans dress formally for business & take grooming very seriously. To Costa Ricans your grooming is a reflection on your credibility.
