Stacey's Costa Rican Factoid & Spanish Word of the Month
|
Monkeys are one of the most common mammals in Costa Rica -
next to bats. There are about four common species of monkeys in Costa Rica,
including the Howler money, Spider money, white-faced capuchin, and the squirrel
monkey. Most monkeys live in groups of 10 to 40 with other animals.
The Spanish word for monkey is: Mono [Mo"no]

Don Barry's Investment Opportunity Area Hard Asset with A Solid Floor
Looking for an alternative investment?Del Pacifico town founder, Don Barry Strudwick, says, "With T-bills yielding 0%, the surge in Del Pacifico lot sales reflects Americans trying to
protect their wealth from a sure to be declining Dollar. Purchasing a
residential lot is a very simple way to invest in a hard asset outside the
United States." Building a house and purchasing a lot at Del Pacifico are a hedge against a falling Dollar.
Recognizing the tough choices U.S. investors are facing, Del Pacifico
has relaxed its 12 month building requirement on residential lots. For
some people, purchasing a lot can become a substitute for buying a low
yielding cd or T-bill. Please call our Baltimore office
(+1-410-727-6444) to discuss this alternative investment idea.

Fernando's Recipe Corner
Mahi Ceviche with Ginger Ale
900g minced Mahi-Mahi
1 onion finely minced
1 minced red bell
pepper
salt
30 lemons
1/2 liter of ginger ale
1 handful of cilantro finely
minced Preparation: One day ahead of time, chop the mahi into small cubes. Marinate it in water with salt for 24 hours in the refrigerator. To prepare the ceviche, stir the mahi well and cover it with lemon juice. It is best to prepare this in a glass pyrex casserole and not in a bowl. Leave the mixture in the lemon juice for 3 hours, well refrigerated. To reduce the acidity, mix in a little bit of salt water and ginger ale. The important thing here is that once the fish is "cooked" in the lemon juice, you want to drain it or it will appear very acidic. Next, add the other ingredients: the pepper, onion and cilantro. Enjoy!

Lolly's Local News Report Want to know what's
new and note worthy in Costa Rica?
Our crowd at a recent Gathering had a sighting of the uber-actor Steven Seagal when he was in Costa Rica recently. Apparently Mr. Seagal was in town to meet
with President Oscar Arias to
discuss bringing film production projects to Costa Rica. It seems that Don Barry brings out the
Hollywood heavy weights wherever he goes!
Our silicon valley
Jet Blue
Airlines announced that it would begin daily nonstop flights to San Jose from Orlando for as low as $69 each
way. This offer is valid between April 14
- June 17, 2009. After that, fares will
start at $139 each way. Either way you
look at it, it is a great deal. So, book
your flights as fast as you can.
In environmental news, a British botanist
discovered two new species of dwarf
salamanders in the remote forest of La
Amistad in South Central Costa Rica.
These brightly colored nocturnal salamanders are only about the size of
a thumbnail. It is amazing to think that
there are still species that have not been discovered. This is evidence of the rich biodiversity of
beautiful Costa Rica.
Eco tourism? Come find the new dwarf salamander
And, in other celebrity news, Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen (if you don't know who they are, then
just skip this part) married for the second time at their home on the Pacific
Coast town of Mal Pais. This event garnered global news coverage and excitement. We wish the newlyweds all the best and extend
an invitation for them visit to Del Pacifico (along with their paparazzi!)

Leslie's Gathering Report The March Gathering...Small But Fun with Lots of Monkeys!
We just finished a lovely visit to Del Pacifico
with a small group of 15 guests. The weather
was magnificent - warm and humid and not a cloud in the sky. This group had a fantastic time with lasting friendships formed. What better way to get to know your future neighbors than by spending the weekend with them! After a lovely Friday of horseback riding and touring, the group split up on Saturday between a zip line at the Chiclet's Canopy tour and a nature walk through Manuel Antonio
National Park. Both groups were lucky enough to see monkeys! Later that night at the beach barbeque, everyone joined up to compare their adventures.
Want to feel on top of the world? Join us for one of our upcoming Gatherings!
Please note: We have changed the dates for the next two Gatherings. The new dates are : June 25th to 29th and August 20th to 24th. Please contact Leslie for more information. Coming soon to the website- photo galleries from the recent Gatherings! Be sure to check back often.

Tim's Eco Facts
I know more about Costa Rica now than I ever did
before I started working with Del Pacifico. I knew it was one of the better
places to be in Central America and
that it was very eco-friendly with lots of rainforest protection. After working with our team down there for years, I've picked up a lot
more information. Costa Rica puts a great emphasis on
environmental protection and very much values biodiversity- after seeing the statistics
associated with the environment in Costa Rica, I wanted
to share some interesting bits of that information:
Cost Rica has about
0.1% of the world's landmass and 5% of the world's biodiversity; 25% of the country's
land area is in protected national parks and protected areas; Costa Rica was ranked 5th in the world for the
Environmental Performance Index, a collaborative study by Yale and Columbia Universities; And saving the best
for last, there's a really cool 100% energy sustainable house that was just
built by the National Power and Electricity Company as part of an environmental
theme park- INBiopark in Santo Domingo de Heredia. The house is powered entirely by wind, sun & organic waste.

Jason's Fishing Report Local Fishing in Esterillos & Deep Sea Fishing From Quepos
The Del Pacifico staff have
not had much luck fishing in the local estuaries, river mouths and beaches. The
fishing should only get better now that we are entering the rainy season
because the water temperature will be cooled off and the estuaries and rivers
will have more runoff. So we are expecting some good snook now that the mullets
are finally showing signs of life.
Just recently one of the condo owners put us all to shame. We usually catch
mullet for live bait to fish along the surf, normal size would be around 4-12
inches. He came walking into the office and said," check out what I caught
with my bare hands this morning." He showed us a fish whose size we did
not believe existed. This was around a two foot long, 20 pound mullet. Who needs to catch fish when the bait is this size?
Looking for some live bait? It doesn't get bigger or better than this 20 lb. mullet!
We are very optimistic about the upcoming months, so stay tuned. However, we do have a
secret for when the fishing is bad...the local fish market. If not for this- our
wives would never believe we were fishing.
On the deep sea fishing front- recent renters gained local notoriety when they caught over 30 sailfish in 2 days! Also, Tom Held, our very first condo owner recently wrestled a 450 pound black marlin! The 450 lb. marlin dancing away after its release!
