Stacey's Costa Rican Fact & Spanish Word of the Month

By far, the most popular sport in Costa Rica is soccer or futbol.  The national team of Costa Rica is nicknamed La Sele.  The team is the third most successful team in CONCACAF (Conference of North and Central American and Caribbean Association Football) after Mexico and the United States.  Le Sele has been the most successful team in Central America having qualified three times for the World Cups.  Costa Rica has been CONCACAF champions three times (1963,1969, 1989) and have won the UNCAF Nations Cup six times. The nation has also participated in three Copa América tournaments, making the quarterfinals on their last two visits.

Spanish Lesson:

Soccer: futbol
Soccer ball:  balon de futbol
Goal:  poteria de futbol

Del Pacifico Newsletter

No. 8, First Quarter 2010

Dear Barry,

As I write this, I am sitting in my office in Baltimore, looking out at the snow covering the sidewalks leftover from the blizzards (yes, plural!) in the Mid-Atlantic and the slightly smaller snowfall last week. Although that first moment of white snow on the ground is beautiful, I really wish I was in Costa Rica enjoying the warmth and beauty in Del Pacifico!

Leslie's Gathering Wrap-Up Report

In January, Don William & Don Barry hosted our first Gathering of 2010 with a group of 33 guests from all over the US. The weekend started at our welcome dinner on Thursday night by the pool at the Villas Del Pacifico condos. Friday found everyone enjoying their exploration of Del Pacifico, riding horses and walking on the beach followed by a typical Costa Rican barbecue at the Del Pacifico Beach Club.

The Hermans at their new home!

On Saturday, we split up to do different tours in the area. Saturday night we all came back together to trade stories and enjoy our "tipico" night at the pool. This was the night of a playoff game for American football between the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts. With guests visiting from Indianapolis & our US staff being entirely from Baltimore, you can imagine the tension! At half time we were entertained by colorful local dancers!

Sunday morning we had a lovely morning on the beach complete with horseback riding and surf lessons before taking the trek up the mountain to San Jose for a lovely farewell dinner at El Novillo Allegre in Santa Ana.

The Gathering resulted in several new owners at Del Pacifico with strong interest in our residential lots.

We are looking forward to the 2010 Gatherings so please
contact me for more information. We already have over 30 people committed for April's Gathering...

Saludos,
Leslie

Stace & Steph's Excellent Adventures
Cheering on the Del Pacifico Futbol Team

Spending a couple weeks at Del Pacifico last August, we were able to truly experience the Tico culture and tried to immerse ourselves as much as possible.  Our trip would not have been complete without attending a soccer game in Parrita.  Del Pacifico has its own team which plays every Monday in Parrita against other local teams.  And protecting the goal is our very own Fernando!  So, on a Monday night we headed to the soccer field in Paritta and watched our guys from Del Pacifico take a win. Mr. Alfaro only let a couple of goals through and our team ended up victorious! After the game we took Fernando out for a celebratory dinner at Parrita hot-spot Huetar and hi-jinks ensued...

Jason's Fishing Report
Owner Experience...Tom Held
Jason with some of the new fishing gear
I would like to give a special thanks to Tom Held, owner of condo 3,  for setting Frank and myself up with all new fishing gear. This was a great surprise and we´ve already  gotten good use out of  this new gear catching rooster,  mackeral and some snapper. Next week I am going trolling along the coast a couple days and I plan on a trip to Palo Seco and Isla Damas Estuary at night. We will keep you posted. - Jason

On a recent trip to visit his condo at Del Pacifico owner Tom Held from Maryland, an avid fisherman, took a charter out of the Quepos Marina with his two good friends, retired Air Force Colonels Loretta and Dennis Behrens of San Antonio, Texas.  Both Loretta and Dennis have hunted and fished all over the world including multiple safaris in Africa, Europe, and South America but neither had ever caught a Pacific Sailfish.  They fished on the Blue Water II with Captain Dale Weir and mate Coco and caught and released four nice sails ranging from 100 to 125 pounds.  Loretta caught the "money" fish, a nice 35 pound dorado which provided some great dinners and ceviche.  Not bad for a one day trip!  The fish are surprisingly close in-shore - from 11 to 15 miles out instead of the usual 20 to 30.  With lines in the water by 8 AM the first sail was hooked and boated by 8:30.  The Ceviche was made by Chef Mike at the Pyramid Café and was truly spectacular.  Fishing should only get better for the next couple of months for billfish and Dorado.

Chef  Fernando's Recipe Corner
Stuffed Rice With Hearts of Palm

After Mr. Held's great fishing day, we were all getting together for dinner and I decided to make a very Costa Rican dish which is when I came up with this dish...We all enjoyed it very much and hope that you do as well!

This recipe works best with fresh palm hearts (from a jar not a can). However, if you cannot find the fresh palm hearts, then soak them in milk for 5 minutes, discard the milk and rinse the palm well. That will neutralize the vinegar taste from the palm.

Chef FernandoIngredients:
400g jar palm hearts, cut in small pieces
1½ cups cooked white rice
1 Red bell pepper cut julienne style
3 garlic cloves, crushed & fried until soft
½ white onion, very finely chopped & fried until soft
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup cream
½ cup milk
1 egg yolk
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
½ cup shredded mozzarella
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground pepper

Method:
Preheat oven to 350Fº.
Sautee garlic, onion and bell pepper and combine well on the EVOO
add the flour and whisk briskly until completely combined.
Add the rice and mix well
Meanwhile combine the egg yolk with the cream.
Add the egg-cream mix and mix until it becomes a thick sauce.
Add salt and pepper
Add the milk in batches to thin out the sauce to desired consistency (sticky but not too much).
Add the hearts of palm and fold over so they don't bake.
Spread out evenly in the base of a greased baking dish.
Cover with the parsley and shredded cheese
Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes or until heated through, cheese has melted and edges are starting to brown.
