Stacey's Costa Rican Factoid & Spanish Word of the Month
|
The Central Pacifico of Costa
Rica has two seasons. The dry season is from November to April, with
February being the driest month. The rest of the year is technically the rainy
season, October being the rainiest. But, despite the long "rainy period", the days begin sunny and pleasurable, with rains moving
in the afternoon or night. There is usually plenty of sunshine to be had
in July and August.
the
Spanish word for:
sun: sol
rain: lluvia
cloud: nube

Del Pacifico Newsletter
|
No. 5, July/August 2009
|

Well, July and August have been great down here in Costa Rica. As always, Don William has been hard at work keeping our beach resort moving forward. He reports that the spectacular "Villa Contenta" luxury home is nearing completion for the Herman family of Washington DC. At the same time Mike Torino, Barry Strudwick & Tilghman Strudwick took the Del Pacifico message to Canada and report 4 new families ready to join the Del Pacifico community. While the fantastic Costa Rican lifestyle is the main ingredient here, Barry reports that owning foreign real estate as a protection against a falling US dollar is also an important part of the decision process. Have you considered a residential lot at Del Pacifico as a way to protect your wealth against an eroding dollar? Did you know that you can purchase land at Del Pacifico using your IRA? Please contact Barry to discuss this. Pura Vida,

Barry's Investment Opportunity Area Hard Asset with A Solid Floor
Looking for an alternative investment?Del Pacifico town founder, Barry Strudwick, says, "With T-bills yielding 0%, the surge in Del Pacifico lot sales reflects Americans trying to
protect their wealth from a sure to be declining Dollar. Purchasing a
residential lot is a very simple way to invest in a hard asset outside the
United States." Building a house and purchasing a lot at Del Pacifico are a hedge against a falling Dollar.Recognizing the tough choices U.S. investors are facing, Del Pacifico
has relaxed its 12 month building requirement on residential lots. For
some people, purchasing a lot can become a substitute for buying a low
yielding cd or T-bill. Please call our Baltimore office
(+1-410-727-6444) to discuss this alternative investment idea. Click here for a special report on this topic.

Local News Report New and note worthy in Costa Rica
Coffee Coffee Coffee...Projections for the upcoming 2009-2010 coffee harvesting are showing a 5% increase in production in Costa Rica compared to 2008-2009. Harvesting begins in October 1 each year and ends September 30. This is great news since this season's weather complications caused the current year's harvest to drop 15%.
Costa Rica and Honduras...Surely you've heard about the crisis in Honduras. Once again President Oscar Arias has been called upon by the global community to mediate the potentially violent situation. President Arias won the Nobel Peace Prize in the 80s for facilitating peace in Latin America.
More Software Comes to San Jose...On Tuesday, August 4, 2009 President Arias cut the ribbon at the inauguration ceremony for the new Oracle office in Santa Ana. The expansion of Oracle, one of the worlds leading software companies, will create 230 job opportunities. Eric Brenner, the VP of Industries for the Latin America operations explained that this was an easy decision due to the "cooperate demeanor of the people and the country's established social and legal system."
Marina Pez Vela...Construction is going full force at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos. The 40 acre new marina is set to open in the autumn with its inital 100 slips. Eventually there will be 300 wet slips, 120- dry storage units and a repair yard. Contact us to arrange your Costa Rica Fishing Vacation Adventure!

Pre-Election Polling...The
presidential election in Costa Rica is not being held until February of
next year but current polls are showing that Costa Rica may very well
have its first female president. Of the 3 candidates Laura Chinchilla,
Oscar Arias' former Vice President, is currently holding 46% of the
votes. |
Leslie's Adventure Vacation Tour Spotlight
Looking for a fun family outing? La Paz Waterfall
Gardens in Varablanca, Costa Rica
has recently reopened after the earthquake that hit the area last January. This is an adventure you don't want to miss. Just
45 minutes north of San Jose, you enter another
world as you wander the trails of La Paz Waterfall
Gardens. You will pass by (and be sprayed by) the five waterfalls that line the trail. There are countless photo opportunities throughout the trail.
While
you are at La Paz, the absolute must-see of the tour is the on-site laboratory for breeding butterflies. You will see butterflies in all different stages of development. If you are lucky, you may even witness a caterpillar emerge from the cocoon a beautiful butterfly. There are more than 4,000 butterflies in the observatory at any
one time- it is absolutely spectacular the first time you see a blue morpho butterfly up close!

Don William's Happiness Report
Earlier this month, the results of the 2009 Happy Planet Index were published and it's no surprise to us that Costa Rica ranked #1 as the Happiest Place on Earth. The survey, conducted by the New Economics foundation, looked at 143 countries and consider not only happiness but life expectancy and ecological footprint (as in "average years of happy life" divided by the "the amount of land required to provide for all their resource
requirements plus the amount of vegetated land required to sequester
(absorb) all their CO2 emissions and the CO2 emissions embodied in the
products they consume."). |
Jason's Fishing Report Local Fishing in EsterillosThe other day I went out with my brother in law Roger out
of Esterillos Oeste in his little boat (panga) to try some local commercial
fishing.

We set out 2 lines throughout the day with about a 1000
hooks and chunks of sardine as bait. This was an interesting experience. When
we put out a line we would let it sit for an hour or so as we prepared bait for
the next line. At the end of the day we caught about 20 kilograms in snapper
and 7 kilos in various other fish. This is not my favourite way to fish but we
had a good time. The ocean was calm and the weather was perfect, which was good
because I tell you those sardine sure stink. To fish in this manner you stay close to shore where no reef is located. Some days they catch
almost nothing and others they can catch up to 100 kilograms. This is commercial fishing
and my hands and arms learned that this is tiring work. Contact us to arrange your Costa Rica Deep Sea Fishing Vacation!

Fernando's Recipe Corner
Last June 3rd, I was honored along with other members
of Del Pacifico staff, to be invited by the Spear family to see a soccer game
at their house (Villa Corteza). It was a great experience, because the three
major ingredients in a "get together" activity were of a great quality: the food, the company and the motive (the soccer match).
Specifically on the food, we had a lots of it, Pork, Beef, all
kinds of BBQ...but there was a side dish that capture my attention...and
when a side dish becomes the center of attention over the meet... is because it is
good stuff; it was an Orzo Pasta Salad, so I though for this summer time, it
could be a good recipe to share with you all.
Orzo Salad
1 cup Orzo (soup pasta), cooked and drained
1 ear corn, husked
1 sweet red pepper (about 1/2 lb), halved and seeded
3 Tbsp plus 2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Cider Vinegar
¼ Cup of Flat leaf parsley
½ Cup of Raisins
Juice of 1 lemon (2-3 Tbsp)
1 pint grape
tomatoes, halved (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
Drizzle corn and pepper halves with 2 tsp oil; arrange on
grill. Grill, turning occasionally, until lightly browned on all sides, about
10 min.
Remove from grill and let cool enough to handle. Cut corn kernels off cob. Dice
peppers about same size as corn kernels.
Toss cooked orzo with corn, peppers, 3 Tbsp oil, and lemon
juice, raisins and parsley. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Thank you very much to the Spear family, for letting us share such a
great time together, and a good recipe.
